Others may know more, but it appears to me that BBM has stopping releasing non-major market data to the public. This ratings period is the quarterly, so now would be when they would have released other market data, but, so far, they haven't.

As for the Edmonton ratings, note the bump that happened with Easy Rock (CFMG-FM) between the yellow column and those that follow. That is, without a doubt, the All Christmas music effect.

This is the last ratings period that includes the month of December, so expect some more meaningful numbers next month at this time. I cannot speak for other markets, but Edmontonians now seem to make an annual habit of flipping their dial to whoever is playing all Christmas music for the entire month of December.

Shine-FM also switched to All Christmas music, but only their regular listeners would have known based on the lack of promotion this year.

So when will the plug be pulled on INews 880?
Similar continuous low numbers that CJNW had here in Vancouver when John Hayes killed it early in this century.

Hicks on Six on Ratings

Postby jon » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:01 pm

Mar 11, 2010 14:40 pm, Graham Hicks / General, 190 words
Radio Ratings Dec. 2009 to Feb. 2010 Edmonton

{Radiofan's ratings grid was inserted here}

Despite the change in audience measurement from often-inaccurate sample diaries to high-tech clip-on sample meters, listenership hasn't dramatically changed from the last "quarterly" report on Edmonton radio.

CHED, CISN and EZ Rock are still dominate, though EZ had the seasonal advantage of playing all Christmas tunes during Christmas, which we evidently quite enjoy.

The sudden leap in fame of Capital FM and Sonic FM, thanks to the people meters, proved to be no fluke.

Everybody else was pretty close to where they were before.

Interestingly enough, the "all others" category - stations whose owners don't want to pay for the privilege of knowing where they stand in relation to other stations - is up to 8.2% or "share".

Which means a fair number of listeners are tuned in to maverick teen station Hot 107, campus radio CJSR, gospel The Light and Shine FM, listener-supported CKUA, ethnic World FM and aboriginal CFWE.

Probably at least half of the "all others" would be Hot 107, as direct competitor The Bounce has taken a hit since Hot 107 was launched before Christmas.

Not included is new pop station Now 102.3, which only launched two weeks ago on Feb. 23, 2010.

Hicks should credit the source of his analysis ... Radiofan's chart and Jon's Christmas insights.

If Graham keeps this up, he could end up working in mainstream media.

In fairness to Mr. Hicks, I did e-mail him with my "Christmas comments" after I wrote them here this morning. He did respond, which is acknowledgement enough, in my books.

Here is a breakdown by Daily CUME, which is the average number of people who listen to a station on any given day, including weekends, out of a total population of 1,130,000 (within the metro area being measured).

Image

I was originally looking at Overall CUME, which is the total number of people who ever listened, i.e. - even just once, to the radio station during the three month ratings period, but have to admit that the results prove that to be a pretty useless number. For example, it would record the fact that you were stuck in traffic with the windows rolled down and a vehicle next to you playing some station you didn't even know existed. The following list is sorted by Overall CUME.

CHED, CISN rule radio roost
12 Mar 2010 * Edmonton Journal * SANDRA SPEROUNES ssperounes@thejournal.canwest.com * Journal Music Writer

Surprise, surprise. As usual, news/talk outlet 630 CHED and country station CISN 103.9 FM topped the latest round of radio ratings, according to the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement.

CHED scored an 11.0 share of listeners between Nov. 30, 2009 and Feb. 28, 2010.

CISN earned 10.5. A share is based on the number of people who tune in and the length of time they listen.

In the past, listeners were asked to keep diaries of their radio habits. Last fall, those surveys were ditched in favour of more reliable electronic devices, or Portable People Meters, which detect hidden audio codes in radio signals.

EZ Rock 104.9 FM, an adult contemporary station, moved into third spot with a 9.6 share, while Sonic 102.9 FM held steady in fourth with an 8.4. Its main rock competitor, The Bear 100.3 FM, wasn’t far behind with 8.3, regaining some of the footing it lost in the fall survey. Capital 96.3 FM, an ’80s and ’90s pop station, also scored 8.3 — a drop from its 9.9 share last fall.

The Bounce 91.7 FM was another loser. The Top 40 station, which used to be one of the city’s more popular frequencies, is down to 4.4. (It was at 5.3 in the fall.) The city’s newest hits station, Hot 107, is likely absorbing those listeners, but it doesn’t subscribe to BBM and isn’t included in the survey’s results.
