Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

David Bray has this to say:

Calgary: CBC Radio One leads the way for A12+ with an 11.2% share (down from 10.2%). Country 105 is popular with the ladies, taking #1 spot for F25-54 delivering a 15.3% share (up from 14.0%) followed by Virgin at 10.1% (down from 13.8%). For M25-54, CJAY92 leads the way with an 11.7% share (up from an 11.5%). CJAY92 takes top spot for M18-34 with a 14.4% share (up from 15.0%). Country 105 is #1 for F18-34 posting a 15.3% share.

I'd hate to think of how much money Newcap blew promoting the Don & Joanne morning show and got zero in return for their investment. In the time they have been at XL, their numbers have never matched
the success XL had before their arrival. IMHO there are two problems on Centre Street. First off, the new morning man should never have been made PD. His programming skills may have been relevant 28
years ago when he was programming AM 106. He was only in his forties then and somehow related to the audience. Allowing him to retool the sound of XL to make the onetime Lite 96 audience feel more
at home if they followed him and Joanne to XL blew off a bunch on core XL listeners who didn't like the new softer sound. The soccer moms driving the Dodge Caravans probably loved it, but the folks who
listened for the rock and roll songs went away to Jack or Q and never came back.

Maybe things will improve. I just heard from someone up at Newcap Edmonton that Stevens has steppeddown as PD. I would imagine that is similar to the way Maz stepped down as PD of AMP radio. I am
hoping the new PD will find a morning show that relates to the music and the audience. Maybe this new person will also rid the Calgary airwaves of the idiotic Tom Kent voice tracked evening show.

Calgary market

It is a tie for #3 position: CJAY 92 and Virgin Radio 98.5 each lock in with 9.2 commercial share points with Calgary's Adult 25-54 radio tuning. The split, Virgin Radio 98.5 ranks #2 among Females 25-54 with 10.9 share, CJAY 92 has bragging rights for being #1 among Males 25-54 with a 13.1 Share. With Classic Country AM 1060, Astral Radio Calgary Adult 25-54 Market Share totals 18.6.

Thanks for the tip isthisthingon. I found the ad and have now applied for the job. I automatically assumed they had someone in place to take over the ship from Stevens,
but i guess that isn't the case, unless of course, they already have someone picked out and ready to step in.

It would be great to be the one to get XL back on track and take it to the next level

'XL's hull has been holed out. They are going under and will continue to do so - as long as they continue to pander to and patronise their strictly adult audience in the same fashion as that audience was treated in the 60's-1990.

Unfortunately, any new PD will be unlikely to have the personal resources or the necessary permissions to do anything other than to change fabrics and relocate some of the deck chairs.

For this station to grab anything even close to it's potential will take a complete re-tooling of its strategies -music, talent programming, commercial production and marketing.

The Talent, I believe, can be saved. But even they would have to go back to Radio Skool and re-learn their trades. And then, they would have to be allowed to demonstrate their new skills. Tunes Are Not Enough.

In the meantime, enthusiasm and best intentions from a new programmer acknowledged - the prognosis is grim.

The XL web site lists, under management, "Paul Kaye, Programming".

(from another thread)

I don't know Al Tompson, but his resume tells me that he knows the ropes at Newcap and has had considerable success in Red Deer. I'd given him at least "even money" (odds) on being able to significantly improve the ratings at XL. My major concern is that he is NOT coming in as an Operations Manager, which may be the kind of clout he would need.

Really, it all depends on how much GM Vinka Dubroja will let Al do. And, of course, how much money those above him will allow the station spend (i.e. - how much money they will be allowed to lose before ratings improve, and rates and numbers of ads increase to bring in the balancing revenue).
