KAFE 104.3 becomes KAFE 104.1

Postby radiofan » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:04 pm

This morning (January 14th) at 7:30 AM Bellingham's KAFE 104.3 and Vancouver's CHHR 104.1 swapped frequencies to make way for a new addition to the Seattle radio dial on 104.5.

Here's a portion of the KAFE morning show with Dave Walker and Shari Matthews before and after (and including) the frequency switch.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

radiofan - thanks for posting the transition for those of us who couldn't record it. Over here in the Goofy Islands, Shore 104.3 is having a tough time with "bleedover" from KAFE 104.1 I was very disappointed driving around the island today attempting to listen to Shore. My observations with both a modulation monitor and spectrum analyzer didn't reveal any problems with KAFE over-modulating and an email from KAFE's Michael O'Shea confirmed that all was well at their end. An email from Rob Wilson at Shore explained that they are on reduced power until tonight or tomorrow as they do final tuning of the new antenna, which would explain the reception problems here. They are apparently announcing this on air too

Yes,thanks for this 'scoped posting. Nothing but props for the crew at KAFE. Great energy on the show,a few very good bits, natural banter. A fine small/medium market radio show clip. And those changeover harp notes?...theatre-of-the-mind inducing. That was about a smooth a transition as it gets.

I guess The Snore have convinced themselves that by "getting better coverage" they might attract some listeners? To quote the Canucks coach "I'd rather give my money to charity".

The final chapter in this whole charade has finally occurred. KMCQ 104.5 in Covington (serving Seattle) was officially launched yesterday with 60’s & 70’s Oldies. At this point their only “live” personality is longtime Seattle jock Mark Christopher (ex-of KJR & KBSG):

To facilitate KMCQ’s move into the Seattle market 4 radio stations were effected and had to relocate to different frequencies. College station KMIH 104.5 in Mercer Island moved to 88.9, KDBD 103.9 in Forks (on the Olympic Peninsula) moved to 96.7, KAFE 104.3 Bellingham moved to 104.1, and of course CHHR 104.1 moved to 104.3.

KMCQ spent big bucks on this and somehow survived through all the bureaucratic rigmarole involved (from 2 countries, yet). I guess time will tell if it was really worth it.

No argument.

But I bet it is dwarfed in comparison with the amount Corus spent on 730's new transmitter site in Vancouver. Only to be followed by one money-losing ratings bomb after another on that frequency.

These days, it's as if they've finally found their niche with the cheapest format, so far, to operate.
