Personally, I'm hard pressed to think of a time between their start of Top 40 (1960) until they started morphing into Talk Radio (mid-1980s) when WLS would not have been a great listen. I started listening in 1964 in the evenings, displacing them with WBZ Boston whenever I could hear them, after discovering them as Christmas 1964, but still listening to WLS when I couldn't hear WBZ. WLS had the hits early, but WBZ even had them beat.
My WBZ listening ended with the move of KTWO Casper, Wyoming, from 1470 to 1030, some time in 1967.
The main problem that WLS faced in Vancouver was CJVI's powerful signal on 900, which caused at least some "slop" on 890 on any radio I could get my hands on at the time.
