Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I wonder why Newcap hasn't buried HANK yet and gone with a Classic Hit-Oldies format as they have done in Calgary and Edmonton. There have been rumours of such a move, but nothing so far. Seems like such a logical move.

I noted the truly abysmal numbers for HANK and thought.."Gotta be an AM to be suffering like that in a music format". Shocked to learn from a trip to their site that they are in fact an FM station. WTF! Do they suck that bad or is the competing country outfit that good. I mean, c'mon, these are worse than CFUN numbers.

Neumann.....the biggest drawback for CHNK was their low power. When Newcap purchased them in 2005 (then CHNR) they were only 1,300 watts and had serious issues with coverage throughout the Winnipeg area. A power increase to 60,000 watts (100KW's E.R.P.) was granted in late 2007. One can only assume that Newcap would have had this upgrade in effect by now. Perhaps someone from "The Peg" can update us on the situation.

The CCF site has the following to say:

2007
On December 6, CHNK-FM was authorized to increase effective radiated power from 1,300 watts to an average effective radiated power of 60,200 watts, increase the effective antenna height to 176.1 metres, and relocate the transmitter.

2008
In relation to the 2007 power increase: On April 8, 2008, the CRTC announced it had now received the technical evaluation comments from Industry Canada, which indicated the average ERP authorized in the TA was 60,900 watts. Therefore, ERP would increase from 1,300 watts to an average ERP of 60,900 watts. Antenna height would increase to 176.1 metres from a new transmitter site.

On April 7 at 6:00 a.m., CHNK-FM was now operating with increased power and playing "continuous country" with 55 minutes of music every hour outside of the morning show. There was also a more focused blend of mainstream country along with Alt-Country, Christian and Bluegrass. At this time Randy Skulsky was general manager and Abbey White was program director.

Thanks for filling us in Jon. In light of finding out that they have indeed increased their power and remain the bottom dweller in the Winnipeg book, I`d say it`s definitely time for Newcap to put Hank out of his misery.

The Industry Canada database shows CHNK`s maximum ERP to be 100,000 watts, while their average ERP is 60,200 watts. Generally speaking most stations use that maximum figure in their profiles and promotions because it looks more impressive.

Hank still has a specialty license to contend with. Not hard to see why they're so low.

I had forgotten that CHNK was operating under a specialty license, however couldn't Newcap have that status removed? The station has been on the air for almost 6 years now with a whole mishmash of formats and brandings. I was always under the impression that the standard commitment for a specialty license was 5 years.
