The erosion of the once Giant 98 has begun, and PPM measurement hasn't started yet!

Congratulations to Gerry O'Day and Dave McCormick the fantastic gains at CISL!

It looks like News 1130 has it's best book ever.

A year from now will The Peak and The Shore be sharing that 1.0 share?

I wouldn't enjoy being a manager at Corus Vancouver today.

Imagine trying to explain:
  • the once mighty CFMI being beat by CBC Radio Two (CBU-FM), especially when the CBC is generally considered to have erred greatly with the format change last September;
  • the once great, formerly known as CKLG AM & FM (now CHMJ and CFOX), together with less listeners than CBC Radio Two;
  • a U.S. religious station with double the Vancouver SHARE of All Traffic CHMJ; and, of course,
  • CKNW being beat by CBC Radio One.

How about being the manager at Pattison and having to explain to Jimmy how you pissed away two full share points by converting an AM station with loyal listeners to an FM station that has the appeal of a dose of the clap?

C-Fox trailing (although very slightly) Team 1040, though keep in mind again it's 12 plus, so there's absolutely no demographic
profiling to speak of here. Also WX ahead of CFMI, and all-traffic remaining a steady (but frugal) bottom dweller. No it's not a great day for them,
however if their sales remain strong they won't care, and though NW is down, they're still very much a factor, as you can see they had
similar number as recently as 07. People meter will be as ol Artie Johnson used to say: "Verrry interesting". Unless they're passed by 2 or
3 stations I don't think you can really say NW is "in decline".

The number though is so similar to 07 I'm not sure you can say that, it may just be a slightly "off" book. It's an oddity
when I sit here defending NW isn't it? :? Actually I tend to defend them almost as much as critcize them, there is still some sort
of strange fondness I have for the big ol' 98, maybe it's the memory of what it once stood for.

CUME

Postby jon » Thu Apr 02, 2009 12:27 pm

Reading left to right the figures are the overall CUME, 5am-1am, 12+, for 2009 and back through 2008, in thousands of listeners. In other words, in a given week, how many people tune in to the station for at least one quarter hour where they were listening to the station for more minutes than any other station?

Nice increase for 'WX!
Congrats to the pro's there, Cartie, Russ Byth, Andy Walsh, Richard Dettman and a few others.
Let's hope Rogers doesn't get over confident and make any cuts.
Of course, All News Stations always do well in times of economic turmoil or any other big event that actually affects their listeners.

Mornings, 25-54

CBC1 14.4
Jack 9.4
News1130 9.0
QM/FM 7.7
Rock101 6.4
Virgin 6.4
CKNW 6.1
JR-FM 5.7
Beat 5.3
CFOX 5.3
TEAM 5.1
CBC 2 3.5
104.9 3.0
730 1.2
CFUN 1.1
CISL 0.7
Peak 0.7

Observations:
Great share for 1130 and a format that's supposed to be all about CUME.
Good start for Virgin.
Highest CBC2 numbers in the country...probably held back The Peak
The Peak: Ouch. I expected 2.0, but that's a rough start

This pasted from this afternoon's report from the Toronto Globe & Mail....just to add things to the pie....

FIONA MORROW

Globe and Mail Update

April 2, 2009 at 3:56 PM EDT

CBC Radio One has taken the top audience share in the Vancouver radio market, toppling traditional local broadcasting leader CKNW. The CBC is yet to confirm whether this is the first time CBC Radio One has achieved the top spot.

According to figures released by radio ratings survey group, BBM, CBC Radio One took an 11 per cent share in the first quarter of 2009, with the morning show — The Early Edition with Rick Cluff —generating a massive 16.9 per cent share in its time period.

The increase in audience at the CBC has been at the expense of CKNW, with a current market share of 10.1 per cent. In 2005, CKNW led with a market share of 14.8 per cent to CBC Radio One's paltry 5 per cent, behind eight other stations.

The CBC Radio One share has climbed steadily ever since. In May 2005, CKNW's long-serving, perennially popular morning show host Brian "Frosty" Forst retired to be replaced by Morning News with Philip Till.

End.

Personally, I can't imagine listening to the stuffed shirts at CBC One......however, to each his or her own. Well done WX and Team 1040.....and as Peter Legge and all at the Variety Club Telethons keep saying.....Which way are we going?.....Higher!!!!

Typical newspaper reporting....never looking any deeper (or doing actual work) than the 12+ share numbers! Expect to see more lazy reporting of these numbers in your local papers across the country tomorrow. :(

Here's an interesting side-note....the stations I posted only account for 67% of respondents, the rest of whom filled in another station...or...eek..."none of the above", for the entire 8 week period.

CBC gets bigger not by gaining listeners, but by commercial stations losing them to nobody.

I'm fine with that. Their angle is "What people are listening to", not "Who's in the best position to sell more ads".

But the biggest story surrounding the CBC ratings is......CBC still doesn't want to sell radio time.....no commercials on radio. How dumb can that be when their station allegedly is number uno in this major market! And CBC is crying about not having enough money.......drrrr!!!
