1450 KONP Port Angeles

Postby albertaboy4life » Mon Apr 13, 2009 11:00 am

This morning, I was driving north of Calgary on a secondary road en route to Airdrie and happened to be scanning the AM dial.

I caught Scooter Chapman from 8:45 am 'til about 9 on 1450 KONP Port Angeles. Station was coming in nice and clear once I got past the power lines.

Haven't listened to KONP since leaving the Island in 2007.

On other occasions, I've heard 1430 KBRC at night in Calgary.
Faster cars, younger women, older cheese, more money . . .

That is one amazing bit of reception. 100% in sunlight, for several hours, along the entire route of the signal.

Including KONP, there are 4 stations EACH on 1450 in Washington state, Idaho, Montana and Oregon, plus one each in B.C., Alberta and North Dakota. 1450 is one of those Local Channels, often known as Graveyarders because of the strange mixing of signals you hear on them at night, with 1000 watts day and night non-directional the maximum allowed (except North of 60).

Calgary was a very unpredictable place for DX.

Most days in the winter you'd get KIRO 710, KOMO 1000 and CFUN 1410 at high noon.

One spring Saturday morning in 1990 around 9AM I had a bunch of low powwer Bay Area stations blasting into Calgary for about a half hour. There was KKIS 990 from Pittsburg, KVON 1440 Napa and KWUN 1480 from Concord as I recall.

KONP is almost a great catch in some areas of Greater Vancouver these days.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
