WCBS-FM’s Dan Taylor scores big in Arbitron’s ratings
It's a good morning for this a.m. show

THE NEW YEAR brought particularly good news for two morning radio shows: Dan Taylor of WCBS-FM (101.1), who had the No. 1 overall show in the city, and the Mike and Mike team at WEPN (ESPN Radio, 1050 AM), who have dramatically increased their share of the young male listeners that sports stations crave.

Taylor, a city veteran whose sparring partner is weatherman Irv Gikofsky (Mr. G), led the pack in the January Arbitron ratings released Monday. His show on the classic hits station averaged 5.6% of the audience, ahead of adult contemporary WLTW (106.7 FM), all-news WINS (101 AM) and top-40 WHTZ (100.3 FM) at 5% each.

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic of 1050 had a different victory. Their show is just 20th overall, averaging 2.1% of the audience. But among men 25-54, the group 1050 sells to advertisers, Mike and Mike averaged 5.6%. That’s almost double their 2.9% a year ago, and it puts them second in the city — trailing only all-sports rival WFAN (660 AM), where Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton averaged 6.4%.

At WCBS-FM, Taylor’s morning win keeps the station on an extended roll. It took the overall top spot in the city for one month last year, breaking Lite-FM’s long and continuing run.

In the mornings, here’s how Arbitron’s January top 10 looked. The number in parentheses is the station’s share of the overall audience in the average quarter hour:

1. WCBS-FM (5.6)

2. WLTW (5.0)

2. WINS (5.0)

2. WHTZ (5.0)

5. WCBS-AM (4.6)

6. WOR (4.3)

7. WBLS (4.2)

8. WABC (3.4)

9. WAXQ (3.3)

10. WPLJ (3.2)

And in the “money demographic,” all listeners 25-54, January broke down like this:

1. WHTZ (6.1)

2. WLTW (5.0)

3. WPLJ (4.8)

3. WINS (4.8)

5. WBLS (4.5)

6. WKTU (4.1)

6. WCBS-FM (4.1)

8. WXNY (3.9)

9. WWPR (3.8)

9. WWFS (3.8)
