Bill Reiter was kind enough to pass on this site with its amazing photographic work. Of advertised v.s. actual burgers and such:

The late Bill Smith (the fellow who created the Super-Valu jingle) was an instructor at BCIT - teaching the "creative - copy writting" class in the evening program.
Bill told the story of how the got the "steam" to rise from a "hot" platter of food so it wold show up on film for a commercial... The story goes; someone would puff cigar smoke under the platter lid and trap it there with the lid. When the lid was lifted the smoke ("steam") would rise and could bee seen on film, giving the illusion of a hot freshly cooked meal. Another trick was to pour lighter fluid over the food. The "chef" wold ignite it for a flambe effect, again the flames could be seen on film.

Everything always looks bigger and better on TV.
Hamburgers are the best comparison, especially those produced by the big food corpse.
They keep getting smaller and smaller and the ingredients more suspect.

Mystery meat. I don't eat at these places anymore. Maybe this solidifes my pledge.
Oh, and thanks to Hall of Famer, Mr.Reiter....now, there's a BC treasure.

After looking at his pics, it would seem many employees got low marks at Hamburger U ! :)

Really interesting about the package sizing.

Actually, I thought the most interesting part was what was delivered when the buyer specifically stated that he wanted it to look like the one in the ad. Which I assume he had a picture of, and let the server take to the cook for reference.

As for the camera tricks used in advertising, the very recent TCM documentary on Jack Cardiff, perhaps the greatest photographer in movie history, unearthed a lot of interesting camera tricks. Like creating fog outdoors "on cue" by steaming up the camera lens by breathing on it. But that is another subject.
