Leave it to Beaver bully Clarence ‘Lumpy’ Rutherford was nothing like his character
POSTMEDIA NEWS APRIL 16, 2013
The actor who played Clarence “Lumpy” Rutherford on the legendary TV series Leave It to Beaver has died. Frank Bank was 71, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Former co-star Jerry Mathers — who played the Beaver on the show that ran from 1958-63 — told the Times Bank had been in hospital recently suffering from a number of illnesses.
Mathers said: “Lumpy was the ultimate bully, but Frank was a very, very kind and gentle person and a very good actor to play it so well. The show was about all the people you knew growing up and throughout your life, and Frank brought that perspective to the show.”
Most of the actor’s latter roles came in various Leave it to Beaver reunion shows, and he reprised the character in the 1980s sequel, the New Leave it to Beaver. He gave up acting for a time and worked as a stockbroker. His memoir — Call Me Lumpy — was published in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; four daughters; and five grandchildren.
