Actor and singer Denis Simpson dies

Toronto actor and singer Denis Simpson who was best known as the host of the children’s television show, Polka Dot Door, has died at the age of 59.

Simpson suffered a brain haemorrhage on Wednesday. He was two weeks away from his 60th birthday.

Simpson was born in Jamaica and grew up in Scarborough. He made his stage debut at age 19 in the original Canadian production of Hair at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

His career spanned 40 years in acting, singing and dancing. He was a choreographer, a director and songwriter. He was the original bass vocalist for The Nylons musical group but left the band to appear in the Broadway musical Indigo before the group became successful. He worked on television as an actor in X-Files, Night Visions and MacGyver.

He won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for his signature role in Ain’t Misbehavin and he won a Jessie award for his one-man show Denis Anyone.
