Probably the last of his era, the old guard that transformed the post-war Italian cinema, film producer Dino De Laurentiis passed away at age 91.
Working with Fellini, he made possible wonderful 1950's movies like La Strada and Nights of Cabiria but is probably best known in America for the remake of King Kong.
In an industry in which it is the directors that are deified, Mr. De Laurentiis had no doubt as to where he stood in the cinematic scheme of things.
"If no producer, no movie," he growled in a 2002 interview with Canada's The Globe and Mail.
