EDMONTON - Edmonton’s music community is mourning the loss of guitarist Gaye Delorme, who died of a heart attack Thursday evening at 64. The highly respected musician was in Calgary at the time waiting to play another show there on the weekend.

Delorme’s career in music took up most of his adult life and covered a wide range of performance and recording situations in Edmonton, Vancouver and Los Angeles. He was slated to play the Edmonton Folk Fest in August.

Apart from being a master manipulator of both acoustic and electric guitars, he collaborated with some of the biggest names on the Canadian music scene, including David Foster and Jann Arden, he produced artists like k.d. Lang, and served as a mentor and teacher to many others.

Born in Thunder Bay, Ont. in 1947, Delorme moved to Western Canada in his teens. He moved back and forth between Edmonton and Vancouver several times over the past few decades as his career took different directions.

His talents as a player were truly multi-faceted. Delorme was able to easily cross over styles and genres from his early interest in rock ’n’ roll and rhythm and blues, to Gypsy jazz guitar, acoustic blues, pop, classical, flamenco and jazz. He performed Joaquin Rodrigo’s famous Concerto de Aranjuez with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and also worked with American jazz artists like Airto Moreira and Stanley Clarke.

As an arranger he spent an intense period in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s working on film scores, collaborating with artists like Stanley Clarke. Back in Edmonton, he was also responsible for producing k.d. lang’s first album A Truly Western Experience.

Delorme had been a resident of Edmonton again for several years when he died. He had problems with substance abuse, particularly during his early career and these exacerbated his other health problems. In recent years, he had reached the point of being nearly blind and suffered from diabetes.
