What else will our kids or grand kids not know about?

Many times a pencil has come in handy and not for writing...
What else from our youth will our kids or grand kids not know about or use?
The link below is only one example...

Comedian Lewis Black had a non-writing use for pencils; in reference to any one of a number of mind-numbing pop groups (Nickelback, Jonas Brothers, James Blunt...take your pick):

".....a band I have never actually heard as, whenever I see them appear, I immediately jam two sharpened pencils into my ears".
"You don't know man! I was in radio man! I've seen things you wouldn't believe!"

Or the old and well loved "Air Farce" sketch on broadcasting schools.
"If you want to be a sportscaster, shove two pencils up your nose."
And "How much does the course cost?"
"How much do you have in your bank account?"

Well... What are the chances of them ever having seen -- or having even the slightest idea how to use -- one of these?

How a piece of string relates to two tin cans.

How a metal bed frame relates to a "Rocket Radio."

How a piece of paper and a pencil relate to arithmatic.

... now my curiosity really has the better of me...

How many here actually know what the pencil in the link shown above is for? :-)

It is very interesting to see where "theater of the mind" has taken this thread.

It seams that unless there is a video game or a larger than life screen with high tech graphics and sound in front of our young folks they can't appreciate the item presented.

Our grand children don't appreciate the drama in a "Gunsmoke' or a "Dragnet". They can't follow an "X minus 1" si-fi program etc.

For us a well written book to read - or a radio program with actors who can lift their parts off the page, along with the sound effects can really draw one into the program.

Stan Freeberg did a radio spot promoting the idea of "theater of the mind"" where he had one of the great lakes drained, filled with whipped cream and than had the RCAF drop a cherry on top... The punch line was something like ... Wont TV expand the mind? Yes but only 21 inches. Good bit and the spot made it's point. It would be great to hear that spot again.

1.) The pencil was used to rewind the tape into the cassette after the casette player "ate" the tape.

2.) Ummm...

Ummm... ;-)

The earliest of the portable cassette players had no pause button, a major problem for reporters on the beat trying to cue up an actuality while filing a story from a phone booth -- the Sony TC 110 being the best example of those most commonly used by radio news rooms at the time.

The simplest solution at the time was to jam the point of a pencil (or Pen) into the spokes of the cassette's supply reel to hold the tape still until you wanted to tape to run.

The cueing problem was eventually solved with the appearance of Sony's three head TC 142 model, possibly the best cassette machine ever made for use on the radio news beat.

..but all of that WAS possible on television...even in 1965. It's called animation. :)

Yeah I know...I get the point they were trying to make.
