In an effort to save $4.6 million a year, Sun Media is cutting 120 jobs at its media outlets.

The companies affected include the Sun chain of newspapers, Internet portal Canoe.ca, free community paper 24 hours and Sun TV.

According to their press release, no layoffs will occur at Vancouver's 24 hours.

Sun Media says it will spend more than $7 million to improve the content quality in newspaper operations and new technology.

I love the doublespeak in the press release. Exactly how are you going to improve content by turfing 120 people? One of the moves was to ditch the entertainment reporter for each of the newspapers and replace them with one. One of the Sun flunkies was quoted as saying "who needs 5 reviews of the same movie?". Readership of the Toronto Sun has dropped 15% in the last year which if it continues they can shut off the lights in about seven years. Everywhere in Canadian media the corporate types are watering down content and then scratching their heads when the audience drops. Rather than looking in the mirror they blame the internet for their self inflicted woes. Lenny and Squiggy are lobbying the CRTC for loosening the ownership restrictions on Canwest so they can sellout to a bigger player. Their incompetent management has caused the stock to go from 13 bucks to around 8 and the only way to get the price up is to be able to sellout.

Just as long as they don't cut the guy who writes the witty retorts to the letter to the editor.

Nah, it couldn't be for four reasons:

1) Says everything in one line
2) Not passive agressive
3) Seldom defaults to puns
4) Doesn't appear to have an affinity for smooth jazz
