Straight gets heave ho from BC Ferries

After July 18th The Georgia Straight is getting the heave ho from BC Ferries. Apparently the Ferry Corp has entered into some sort of suspect deal with Canwest and Trader Publications that gives them the exlusive right to distribute newspapers on the Ferries. Who at BC Ferries got paid off to push this through? How much is Canwest and Trader paying?
According to a Ferry Co mouthpiece The Straight would have to make a deal with its competitors in order to be available at ferry terminals. Yeah right. Apparently the deal was not put up for public tender either and is another example of why large corporate media is bad news for the public. I don't agree with much of what is written in The Straight but compared to the piffle sheets put out by Canwest it is a real newspaper. This move by BC Ferries is a disgraceful backroom deal that should not be tolerated.
