Air Travel and Security

Just back from a few days in Las Vegas.
The place is suffering from the recession and the addition of 9 thousand new hotel rooms in the Aria complex.
That's lead to a price war amongst the existing hotels/casinos, resulting in $30US a night rooms in a 4 star establishment.
Deals are everywhere from meals to shows to anything being sold.
But the service remains impeccable.
Vegas knows how to survive.
The vacation was great.
Getting there wasn't much fun.
Be at the airport 3 hours before your flight because some nutbar got on a plane in Amsterdam and tried to blow it up in the States.
That means everyone must toe the US Homeland Security line.
So, arrive at the airport three hours before the flight.
Stand in line to check in even if you've printed your boarding pass at home and no carry on bags, except very small ones.
Go to the security gate and go through everything but a full body search.
Take off your shoes, your jacket, your belt, empty your pockets, have your hands swabbed and the swab scanned.
They go through my bag containing a camera, sunglasses and medication.
My jeans have rivets (like most do) but the doofus with the wand has to check every one of them over and over to make sure they won't blow up.
That took about ten minutes from the time you put all your stuff in the bin until you got it back again.

WARNING: POLITICALLY INCORRECT COMMENT COMING UP

Several Americans going through the same gate were snickering about the fact that almost all of the people doing the screening fit the US Racial Profiling template of people who are suspect.

END OF POLITICALLY INCORRECT COMMENT.

Coming back to Canada, an entirely different experience.
Still, be at the airport three hours before your flight.
Check your bags but apparently, carry ons were permitted but no one bothered to inform anyone.
Going through US Security was a breeze.
Put your stuff in the bin, walk through the gate and "Thank you very much, enjoy your flight."
