Homeless People Tapped To Fill Empty Seats At Olympic Venues

"The so-called 'empty seat syndrome' at some Olympic events has been solved" said VANOC spokesman Harry Jawbone at a hastily arranged press conference held early this morning."

VANOC - under intense pressure to do something to rectify the poor optics created by the lack of bums in seats, has - well, arranged to put bums in seats - literally.

"We've arranged for several hundred of the city's homeless population to sit in them" reported Jawbone.

Earl Tincanski, himself homeless and speaking for the other two thousand homeless hires said it was a win-win situation for both parties.

"VANOC needed bums in seats and we are happy to oblige" he said.

Tincanski - who was recruited by VANOC Security Police when they found him re-heating a can of soup over the Olympic cauldron near the convention centre two days ago - welcomed the chance to help out in the city's hour of need.

The ragtag crew will be at VANOC's beck and call whenever they're needed to 'fill out'
an event.

Their first appearance will be at Session 6 of the Women's Round Robin Curling event at the Vancouver Olympic Centre tonight at 7 PM PST.

Aerial surveillance over the site showed several hundred shopping carts stretched around the rink's exterior as the homeless began arriving early in the afternoon to take their seats.

And how much are they being paid for their attendance?

"I'm not at liberty to say" replied Tincanski, "What happens in the dumpster stays in the dumpster."

I for one am revelling in the fact that these national broadcasts are constantly quoting Pacific time, and folks in Toronna & environs are having to do the math .... for once.

For these two weeks, perhaps for the first time, the world is not revolving around THEM!

It was funny yesterday to hear some CTV eastern dimbulb having trouble with the time conversion and actually admitting it on air.
It's three hours, stupid.
Eastern is three hours ahead of Pacific.

Forget the easterners... locals are having issues too. I saw parts of Global BC's NOON news pretty much every day this past week, and EVERY time she made a reference to the time of day in her traffic report, Wesla Wong said 'This Morning'. Is no-one there paying attention, or do they just not give a damn because there's no competition.

Give the child a break. She's only been in the business for 25 minutes.

I thought one of the courses they taught at broadcast school was Time Telling 101, which I believe included being able to distinguish between morning and afternoon. Surely someone on staff has noticed? Are they not allowed correct the 'talent'?

A lot of the people in the business now have been thrown in the deep end without training.

Not fair to them, and to the audience.

No knock on Wesla - or anyone....it's just like any skill - practice and experience are the best teacher.

Interesting. How much practice or experience do you need to tell the difference between morning and afternoon?

And while we're at it, evening starts at 6pm.
It's afternoon between 12 noon and 6pm.
Evening is generally considered to last until 9pm and then it's night.
Overnight is midnight to 6am.
I constantly hear these designations abused on local radio and tv.

This is weird...I find myself agreeing with glaherty.
So Cleaver, you're saying that when its dark at 5 and 5:30pm, its still afternoon?
According to who?
And where in the world did the 'evening ends at 9pm' designation come from???
Taking his 'logic' to the extreme, the person doing the 10 or 11pm news should start by saying 'Good Night'? :occasion7:
And the person on the air at 1am should say 'Good Overnight'?
Or are these "it shall be so" Cleaverisms.
Idiot. :sign6:

Give her a break! She was undoubtedly away with the sniffles when they covered "time telling" in BCIT's broadcast training.

Reminds me of my doctor. Whenever he can't figure out what is wrong with anyone in my family, he says it must be their adenoids, because that was covered on the only day he missed in medical school. I just don't have the heart to tell him that mine were removed when I was 5 and had my tonsils taken out.
