While I admit that free is among my most favourite four letter words . . .

I also say to the idea of free transit to beware of the "tragedy of the commons."

And yes I recognise its limitations and less than accurate historcial defences.
Faster cars, younger women, older cheese, more money . . .

After reading about the Tragedy of the Commons, I think the problem is Free Roads, not Free Transit. But that's just me.

That's a perspective I hadn't considered, jon.

I guess my response would be that the road might be free, but the vehicle isn't. So the use of a vehicle would be the limiting factor deterring over-utilization of the resource. And the pedestrians without a vehicle would be deterred (or not) by the law or the danger of walking among high speed vehicles.

Why would you want to make people leave their cars to take transit? Who would pay Translinks bills?
