Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

With Blood, Sweat & Tears 3, the hits just kept on coming for Toronto blue-eyed soulster David Clayton-Thomas and his American big-band buddies.

Except each hit charted substantially lower than the three consecutive #2 charters in 1969 on the eponymous Blood, Sweat & Tears album released late the previous year. Hi-De-Ho (written by Goffin and King) peaked at #14 while Lucretia McEvil (a Clayton-Thomas original) topped out at #29.

One theory for the chart slippage was BS & T losing cred with rock fans for accepting a State-Department sponsored goodwill tour of Eastern Europe. The arrangement supposedly included Clayton-Thomas getting permanent residency and, thus, no longer fearing deportation for being a Canadian with a criminal record. Whatever, BS & T was soon to be far behind rival Columbia big-band rockers Chicago after a year or so of both acts being in a virtual popularity tie.

Drummer/co-founder Bobby Colomby was still a big part of BS & T on Lucretia McEvil. Before long, he’d step back, take ownership of the band name, and receive a royalty from group versions using varying vocalists...from Clayton-Thomas, Jerry Fisher, Luther Kent to Clayton Thomas again until about 2005.

These days, former American Idol runner up Bo Rice fronts a Blood, Sweat & Tears that, in a 2015 Australian tour, had no original members. In a phone interview with Aussie e-zine Noise 11, band-name owner Colomby compared it to a certain legendary pinstriped baseball team. “When you’re at a Yankees game, you don’t expect to see Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig,” said Colomby. “But what you will see is a top notch brand...and the best possible combination of players on the field to represent the Yankees (or Blood, Sweat & Tears) legend.”

An awkward comparison given that Colomby, Clayton-Thomas and a few other veteran members are still hale and hearty. Then again, it’s called “the music business” for a reason.
