Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1970 ... Domenic Troiano and Bush from Toronto and "I Can Hear You Calling" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Emerging from the ashes of Toronto soul-rockers Mandala, Bush was a one-album and done band whose members all went on to better things. I Can Hear you Calling no doubt opened doors for Domenic Troiano (guitar), Roy Kenner (vocals), Prakash John (bass) and Pentti “Whitey” Glan (drums). A modest Canadian hit, it got scattered airplay in the US.

Bush was on last legs when Three Dog Night covered the song which subsequently ended up as the B-side of Joy To The World, a five-million seller. Flip sides can be composers’ gravy train as, at that time, they got a few pennies for every sale of a successful A-side. So it was good news for all Bush members except John. He didn’t collaborate on the song. But keyboardist Hugh Sullivan did...and thus was credited.

By most accounts ex-Mandalan Sullivan recorded and toured with the band. For whatever reason, he was not in the cover photo with the other four.

Post Bush, Troiano replaced Joe Walsh in The James Gang and was soon joined by Roy Kenner. When Domenic graduated to The Guess Who, Roy stayed with the Gang and its next guitarist Tommy Bolin. Glan and John took their skills to Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. Domenic Troiano turned to film and tv soundtracks after a solo career on Capitol Records that saw him chart some Kenner-sung tunes in Canada. Domenic died almost a decade ago; Whitey Glan passed last year.

The old band made news in the mid-90s when up-and-coming British group Bush (or more likely its management) sued to prevent Troiano & Co from reissuing the 1970 RCA/Dunhill album. But the Canadians held a strong legal hand. England’s finest became Bush X in Canada on its first two albums. Troiano and new Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale negotiated a win-win whereby the Brits donated to a Children’s Hospital care initiative plus a music-therapy charity.
