Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1979 ... From Flying Colors, it's Trooper and "3 Dressed Up As A 9" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

3 Dressed Up As A 9, along with Janine, was pretty well the last hit of any consequence for Trooper. Both 1979 singles were on Flying Colors. The fifth Trooper studio album, it was the first not helmed by Randy Bachman.

Flying Colors was recorded at Studio 55 in Los Angeles by studio co-owner Howard Steele. Ironically, it was the same facility used by Bachman a year earlier to record his Survivor solo album. Also where Burton Cummings laid down his first post-Guess Who albums—one of them with Randy heavily used as a session guitarist—for Portrait Records.

With its techno beat, 3 Dressed Up As A 9 was musically catchy. Lyrically it always left a very bad taste. To my ears, an irredeemably misogynistic song. No evidence in the words that the woman ever did the narrator wrong. He just takes it upon himself to criticize her for maximizing her appearance. A low point in the collaborative history of Ra McGuire and Brian Smith.
