Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

West End Girls, the song, was a tremendously catchy 1984 synth-pop hit for British male duo Pet Shop Boys. West End Girls, the band, was a synth-pop female trio from Vancouver. Comprised of Camille Henderson, Aimee MacKenzie and Silvana Petrozzi, WEG entered Little Mountain Studios to cut material produced by John Dexter for his Johnny Jet label. Their cover of the old Jackson 5 classic I Want You Back and second single Not Like Kissing You got substantial play across Canada and earned US releases via A & M Records.

Silvana Petrozzi left in 1992 and was replaced by Janele Woodly. Then, just before the Girls' sophomore album, We Belong Together, bowed in '93, Camille Henderson exited. Celia-Louise Martin took her place. It's unclear if some of Henderson's backup vocal tracks survived on that album. But Camille got a co-writing credit for one song, Anything To Make You Mine.

Interestingly, Camille is the daughter of Chilliwack founder Bill Henderson. He reportedly coached the original trio in the buildup to their first album. Two ex-members of Chilliwack--guitarist John Roles and keyboardist Dave Pickell--worked on sessions for the second album. While that West End Girls sequel didn't do much, songs were later used for the soundtrack to Better Than Chocolate. Directed by Anne Wheeler, and shot in Vancouver, Chocolate was rated #31 of the 200 top independent films for 1999 by the Hollywood Reporter.

As a backup singer, Camille Henderson toured and recorded with Sarah McLachlan. She is currently a session singer and vocal coach. Years after leaving West End Girls, Silvana Petrozzi, now called Silvana Kane, formed world-music band Pacifika. With four albums recorded, that group also features Adam Popowitz. As a hard rocker, he cut two Atlantic-distributed albums--with Mollies Revenge and Yve Adam respectively--for David Foster's 143 label.
