It's Been a Long Day!

It's Been a Long Day!

Postby jon » Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:41 pm

No, we didn't take the day off. But our web server did little more than twiddle its thumbs all day.

Our hosting company had a catastrophic software failure overnight last night where their daily software update process went astray, and messed up the software on most of their web servers, including ours. Unfortunately, fixing the problem became a mostly manual operation and, with thousands of servers like ours to fix, their staff spent the last 18 hours getting around to doing ours.

Welcome back!

Had I known Today In History and all that goes with it wouldn't get posted until 8:30PM, I would have gladly slept in way past 6:30AM!

Thanks to all who called, messaged and emailed wondering where RW was today.

Nice to see press coverage of any kind on outages. The last host company always said "sorry" but nothing else and charged the same until the next outage.

The latest host I have has been far superior - ony 1 minor glitch in about a year. - It is so good I don't know the name.

I understand Dreamhost is planning on changing it's name to Nightmare Host ... and all the best their future endeavours to some of their fine techies.

The folks at Dreamhost have given the server massive doses of Viagra and Cialis, so it should be up for awhile.

And it's Jon we should be thankful for his tech knowledge, patience and ability to deal with these people and not lose it with some of the incompetence he has to deal with at these companies. :violent1:

Website outages are so difficult with a loyal fan base wanting to know whats going on.

I can tell you that I have a lot of advertisers on my website and I would lose sleep :violent1: if the service they had contracted for
was not there.

Thank God for RW and the gang of technical bunnies in the back office for keeping us "up" without expensive drugs.

Dreamhost? Nothing new for them... but they offer good value.
I answered too many calls from angry clients wondering why their site was down, but I had to tell them since I do not manage the backend for Dreamhost (their choice of provider) I am not able to control the situation.

Although being in the telecom business I understand the major impact network downtime has on operations, and people, now that people are relying on technology more than ever. And I have had situations where I am on the line for problems.

When this place was down I thought back to the last time I saw this:

and went: 'oh, right.'

I was almost half way through moving to our new web hosting service when DreamHost's normally reliable shared hosting database server started failing. Unfortunately, the only piece of RadioWest still there was the database of forum posts.

So, I just did an emergency move of the database to our new hosting, and everything should be back in working order again. Privately, I e-mailed the one member whose posts were lost (in the 10 minutes it took me to copy the database across) and apologized.

The Search feature has also been turned off as part of the emergency move. The Search index it uses is 3 times the size of the rest of the database, so it would slowed things down too much to move it. I'll rebuild it when things settle down, in a few days.
