Windows 8 May Win the Tablets War

Postby jon » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:53 pm

Many people are now pointing to this article as an indication of what the future of Tablets and Smartphones may be:
http://venturebeat.com/2012/03/14/dylan ... le-market/

It is a tough read, but basically it says:
  1. Tablets and Smartphones are converging into essentially different sizes of the same thing;
  2. there is a huge potential customer base for Windows-based Tablets among existing Windows Desktop users;
  3. the huge amount of existing Windows software is what they are waiting for;
  4. Windows 8 "General Availability" (not just today's Beta) has to hit the market before any of this can happen

It isn't saying that existing Tablet and Smartphone customers will dump their iPads, iPhones or Android-based mobile devices. But that their numbers will be nothing compared to the existing Windows Desktop users who don't own any of them yet and would suddenly get interested if they could replace and complement their Windows Desktop with a mobile device that looks and feels just like their Desktop.

Wishful thinking on the part of the author and Microsoft. The marketplace has fragmented the dominant position of Microsoft Windows, because other graphical interfaces have been accepted by the consumer. The average user of today sees the device as a tool rather than as a `computer'.

No argument with that. The author and those who reference him are talking about the "large unwashed masses" who don't have a tablet now, but very likely would if it looked like their Desktop Windows machine.

:lol: :lol:
The Windows platform will blur the distinction between a tablet and a PC.

Yeah, by pissing off desktop users with the annoying Metro Interface (which can NO longer be disabled) and putting clunky old PC software onto a tablet. Sure, this will work, SURE!

I have to agree with PMC on this one.

All the tablet stuff aside (which still makes me chuckle), Windows 8 will be another Vista...in that it will not have a very wide adoption. It will be mostly home users that get the OS out of the box. Many enterprise environments are only now starting to or just recently cut over to Windows 7.

Microsoft's glory days are well behind them and the only thing they have left to hang on to is the server and enterprise desktop market. With everything else, they've either been late to the game, missed the mark completely or both. How's that Windows Phone doing? ;-)

Three letters can describe the start of the consumer shift to the tool concept, RIM, and its Blackberry.

There is `large unwashed masses' who don't have a Microsoft tablet or phone, and some will get one or both. The fact that it can look like their desktop is not a true sales boost because a teminal program running within your tablet can give you the same desktop look. It is all relative to how the user is a user with the tool in hand.
