A Short Outage Sunday Evening

A Short Outage Sunday Evening

Postby jon » Sat May 26, 2012 9:11 pm

The commercial "virtual server" upon which RadioWest.ca resides requires a "reboot" Sunday night sometime between 7-10pm Pacific, 8-11pm Mountain time. There will be single outage during that period, of less than 30 minutes.

When we moved to our present web hosting company early this year, I mentioned that this one is different, in that I had to install and configure "all" the software myself. Since then, the few times I've had to reboot, I've done it in the middle of night, after checking to be sure no one was posting.

This reboot on Sunday evening is different. It is initiated by the web hosting company because there are installing a security upgrade to the software they use to make it look like I have a real computer to run RadioWest.ca on. It is, in fact, a "virtual computer", more correctly known as a "virtual private (web) server", and is the only reason we can afford the kind of isolation from other web hosting customers that we need to provide reliable service.

I think Russ is pointing to this and what is related in the tech world.

Well, let see, I've got "Madmen" on AMC at 7PM, "Game of Thrones" on HBO at 9PM and two 90 minute episodes of "Sherlock" DVR'd from PBS that I haven't yet watched.
I think I'll be okay.

Has it been decided yet whether the outage will be during Pacific or Mountain time?

Obviously, I should have gone to the effort of writing an official Press Release.

I think the outage was shorter than the length of time it took me to read why there would be an outage.

Is Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics still around? If so, you may want to check them out.

By my calculations, you are currently just South of three words per minute. Not bad for typing. Reading, not so good.

I took several pictures of myself during the outage. Did others record their activities at 7:13 pm MDT for posterity. :phew:

Think I could have used that Sunday - the Memorial Day concert was cancelled due to wind and a rerun from last year on KCTS didn't hold my attention.

O well. Just an another outage without Sherlock.
