Sun News Network to make its case for mandatory carriage to the CRTC

GATINEAU, Que. - Sun News Network is set to make its case later today to the federal broadcast regulator that it should be included in every basic cable and satellite package across Canada.

The Quebecor-owned news channel is seeking what is known as mandatory carriage from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Mandatory carriage would generate significant revenue for the network, which is proposing that it would earn 18 cents a month from every household that subscribes to a basic cable or satellite package.

That would help offset the network's losses, which were $17 million in 2012 -- a situation that Quebecor (TSX:QBR.B) calls "clearly unsustainable.''

Sun News Network says the current distribution agreements are inadequate to support the channel, which is only offered in 40 per cent of households.

It says these distribution challenges also hurt advertising revenues.

oh swell...yet another argument for availability of "a la carte" channel selection from cable companies. We should have the choice to opt out of channels we don't want and I definitely DON'T want to pay for Sun Channel. :orclown:

It would appear that the only way we'll ever get away from "Basic Cable" in Canada, where you get a bucket-load of channels that you HAVE to buy, before you can get anything else, is for a television-delivery technology to come along that, even when it gets very popular, is not regulated by the CRTC.

NetFlix and its competitors are on-demand services, rather than the scheduled programs of television, so they are viewed differently by government and the CRTC.

And that is the solution: internet delivery.
But here's the rub.
The internet distribution system is "owned" by guess who: the broadcasting and content companies.
Bhell owns CTV.
Shat owns Global and Shat Cable.
Smellus owns their internet service and TV cable service.
Robbers owns City TV and Robbers Cable and Internet.
Either way, they make sure you pay.
By overcharging for internet access with low speeds and crippling download caps, they hope to have their cake and eat it too.
Compare internet prices, speeds and download caps to almost any other civilized countries.
We're near the very bottom with restrictive clauses which I mentioned above.

Plus, in the name of protecting other customers' Internet service, at least one of the aforementioned (by Mike) Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has been caught blocking streaming video traffic. From, as you might guess, a competitive provider of IPTV.

I insist on having Sun News available on a standard channel. This over the French outlets, the Italian outlet and the Chinese outlet. Sun News, for me, is the balance that isn't there while The Ministry of Truth gets two!

For goodness sakes Pave.....all Sun TV does is preach hatred and racism. How can you possibly call this crap a "balance"?

Hi Everyone,
Quite a hot debate here. You know what I say forget about the tv channels! Its radio all the way for me and I say Petition the CRTC to force cablevision systems all across Canada to carry the two best radio stations in North America for the widest selection of music and in one case heavy promotion of Canada. Both stations should get awards for the great local radio programming they do that is unique in North America, what stations am I talking about folks. Okay here they are D Moos Internet Radio out of Georgetown, Ontario, its only internet but boy do they promote Canada heavily and play a wide selection of oldies going back in the past 60 years and clips for old tv shows and commercials too. The Canadian Tourism info. for All Provinces and Cities in Canada is excellent. The other one is WHVW 950 Hyde Park, New York. A little 500 watt AM Commercial station that provides one of the most unique local radio formats in the entire USA out of over 4000 Am Stations, its also unique for Canada too, no AM station comes close to the wide selection of everyday 1920s to 1970s Free Form Eclectic Flashbacks that they play including great old train songs too! I know its a pipedream to think the big corporate cablevision companies would even consider putting these two on their systems but thats the type of thing the CRTC should put mandatory on cable systems, not the kind of tv station crap we are getting, that stuff is way on the backburner on my books!!!!

Please note: I did not suggest Sun News was balanced - a weird concept anyway. What I said was that Sun News was a balance against the CBC.
If it wasn't for the SUN organization, Idle No More would have remained credible. And yes, I find what the First Nations leadership is doing to their constituents to be extremely hateful.

well, Pave, if I have to put up with crap like the Sun News Channel on my cable basic package, then I want El-Jazeera, Sun Mercury-News, plus some other international news broadcasters to balance out all the right-wing garbage masking as 'news'. Mike is right - it's a no-win as the same monopolies that own/run the cable networks are the same boneheads holding us hostage with overpriced, inferior internet service. If it were not for my dear wife - who is the 'TV junkie' in our home, I would gladly cut the almost $80 we pay for the digital Shaw package. The supper-hour TV news and few programs I do watch, can all be found on-demand online. There's approx 80-100 channels on there and most of it is of no interest to either of us. :bag:

Sun News is to the right of Attilla the Hun - not my cup of tea. I tried Adler once and that was it.

Yes, I also want Al-Jazeera. And I want access to the fanatics at Fox. and I want LINK-TV, as well. An arbitrary filtering from a government commission or a corporate entity smacks of something less than a balanced access to information. I want to know what everybody's pumping out.

Greetings
Interesting comments on this thread. I must admit I am not a big video or television fan at all. However I do feel really good tv stations or services should be mandatory on basic cable. CBC TV does a fairly good job and I have no objection to that been mandatory. Also commercial tv stations like CHEX TV Peterborough and CHEK TV Victoria do a good job at local news programming etc. and to me they rate been placed on priority on cable. The other stations which I feel are serving their local area well are the few Community over the air tv stations that are licensed in Canada including one in Leamington, Ontario, just forget the calls but they are a over the air local community independent tv station!

I like radio more than tv because it helps develop your mind more, you have to visualize a lot with radio when listening not just sit there and become a couch potato!!!! However I have watched the all news tv networks too like the CBC ALL News, CTV All News and CNN of course. Even looked at the BBC TV All news too. But like I said I prefer radio for local programming and the LOCAL ALL NEWS radio stations like WCBS 880 NYC, WBZ 1030 Boston, CFTR 680 Toronto and yes CKWX 1130 Vancouver (even though I am not impressed by some of the amateur hour news reporters there) (Do like Kim Seals and Jim Bennie, pros all the way and People like this make WX 1130 worth listening to for News and so forth).

I think I understand where you are coming from PAVE on your idea of wanting to get a wide range of opinions in tv programming even if they are from rather fanatical viewpoints. You are looking for a diversity of tv channels to see what everyone is saying!!! I do agree with you SKY Valley, a lot of all those cable channels you pay big bucks for are tv wasteland though. Like I said I am much more a Radio Person than TV... Mrs. CFAY (Ann) and I get a kick out some of the old tv programs from ME TV KVOS 12 Bellingham, she likes more of them than I do but I agree the old shows seem much better. Yes I do watch Hockey on CBC quite a lot but can just as easily enjoy it on the radio too! Anyway a few more comments about this. I do think the whole tv and cablevision thing in Canada is pretty much dominated by big corporate companies who charge big money to see all this on cable etc... Of course if you use outside tv antennas or diversity indoor rabbit ears systems you can tell the cable to take a flying leap. A digital converter box can be used with older tvs with this if they don't have digital capability as well! You just hook it up between the outside antenna or indoor one and your tv set antenna terminals. Home Hardware in Canada sells several models of converter boxes plus tv antennas still. Here in Southern Ontario many people still have outdoor tv antennas, some with small tv dishes too even if they have cablevision, all through Toronto you can see outside tv antennas mounted on masts, some are still used! Out west in the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley area as well as Calgary, Alberta you see very little outside antennas used but this is not the case in Southern Ontario!!!!!

Take care everyone, All the best 73s Eldon

if Sun succeeds in their request, then any one, could create a tv studio, and demand carrage... get 10 wrestlers in a studio for 24 hour wrestling, or 10 porn stars in a studio and call it free porno tv... thanks to the 18 cents per household... either would get a better cume than Sun ;-)

So. Is that more a comment about the programmers or about the audience....? (Or both...?)
