Greetings
Interesting comments on this thread. I must admit I am not a big video or television fan at all. However I do feel really good tv stations or services should be mandatory on basic cable. CBC TV does a fairly good job and I have no objection to that been mandatory. Also commercial tv stations like CHEX TV Peterborough and CHEK TV Victoria do a good job at local news programming etc. and to me they rate been placed on priority on cable. The other stations which I feel are serving their local area well are the few Community over the air tv stations that are licensed in Canada including one in Leamington, Ontario, just forget the calls but they are a over the air local community independent tv station!
I like radio more than tv because it helps develop your mind more, you have to visualize a lot with radio when listening not just sit there and become a couch potato!!!! However I have watched the all news tv networks too like the CBC ALL News, CTV All News and CNN of course. Even looked at the BBC TV All news too. But like I said I prefer radio for local programming and the LOCAL ALL NEWS radio stations like WCBS 880 NYC, WBZ 1030 Boston, CFTR 680 Toronto and yes CKWX 1130 Vancouver (even though I am not impressed by some of the amateur hour news reporters there) (Do like Kim Seals and Jim Bennie, pros all the way and People like this make WX 1130 worth listening to for News and so forth).
I think I understand where you are coming from PAVE on your idea of wanting to get a wide range of opinions in tv programming even if they are from rather fanatical viewpoints. You are looking for a diversity of tv channels to see what everyone is saying!!! I do agree with you SKY Valley, a lot of all those cable channels you pay big bucks for are tv wasteland though. Like I said I am much more a Radio Person than TV... Mrs. CFAY (Ann) and I get a kick out some of the old tv programs from ME TV KVOS 12 Bellingham, she likes more of them than I do but I agree the old shows seem much better. Yes I do watch Hockey on CBC quite a lot but can just as easily enjoy it on the radio too! Anyway a few more comments about this. I do think the whole tv and cablevision thing in Canada is pretty much dominated by big corporate companies who charge big money to see all this on cable etc... Of course if you use outside tv antennas or diversity indoor rabbit ears systems you can tell the cable to take a flying leap. A digital converter box can be used with older tvs with this if they don't have digital capability as well! You just hook it up between the outside antenna or indoor one and your tv set antenna terminals. Home Hardware in Canada sells several models of converter boxes plus tv antennas still. Here in Southern Ontario many people still have outdoor tv antennas, some with small tv dishes too even if they have cablevision, all through Toronto you can see outside tv antennas mounted on masts, some are still used! Out west in the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley area as well as Calgary, Alberta you see very little outside antennas used but this is not the case in Southern Ontario!!!!!
Take care everyone, All the best 73s Eldon
