CFUN Hi Fi Forty #1 March 19, 1960 + audio

On March 10 1960 Vancouver's CFUN 1410 went full time Top 40. On March 19, 1960 the first CFUN Hi-Fi Forty was published.

The Hi-Fi Forty was actually a Top 60, #41 - 60 were "Future Fun Favorites". The Hi Fi Fortuy name came from CFUN's
Coca-Cola Hi Fi Club (a Coke sponsored feature on stations all over North America).

Our resident chart and music historian, Larry "Firedog" Morton has put together a 10 minute montage of all 60 songs on this
CFUN chart ... Snippets of each song played in order from #1 down to #60 ...

What an amazing bit of history that is... and Larry... what a great job you did on the montage. Listened to the whole thing and followed along on the chart. One thing I found fascinating was the total absence in the Top 60 charted songs... of Elvis Presley... or the Everly Brothers... It's hard to believe there was a time when they couldn't be found somewhere in the top 60.
Again ... a really enjoyable exercise... and thanks RadioFan for sharing and Larry for all your work. :salute:

The Everly Brothers release, Let It Be Me, last appeared on the C-FUN in studio survey February 27, 1960. Their next release, Cathy's Clown would appear April 16, 1960.

Elvis served his two year hitch in the army from March 1958 to March 1960. His first release after discharge was Fame And Fortune which appeared on the April 2, 1960 C-FUN Survey.

That was a pretty amazing month then! Thanks FireDog! Where did you ever manage to find every single song on the chart, no matter how obscure? :occasion5:

I can't recall ever seeing any other station with 20 Hitbounds, as they would later be called. Really quite amazing.

And it wouldn't be long before the Hi-Fi Forty became the C-FUNtastic Fifty.

Cubbycam, the CFUN years between 1959/60 and 1967 are my favourite. Once I had collected/borrowed/scanned all the CFUN surveys from those years, I attempted to collect every song that charted during those years. I need only one more, John Stone - Together. Now I'm trying to collect Canadian label scans of the songs that charted in Vancouver from 1956 to 1978. Whew....

My parents told me that the CKMO Jack Cullen years were pretty good, too, long before the call letters changed to CFUN. I think I remember one story of Jack doing his show from a Grouse Mountain ski lift.

The Jack Cullen Grouse Mountain Chair Lift broadcast was in Jack's CKNW era, most likley in the early 1960's. For a few years, he did his Saturday night show from places all over town.
He'd show up at a White Spot Drive In Restaurant and talk to car hops and customers, he'd stop by night clubs like Isy's or The Cave. His most famous Saturday Night broadcast would
have to have been August 22nd of 1964 ... Him and fellow NW''er Jack Webster along with newspaper columnist Jack Wasserman (along with others) did the entire show from Empire
Stadium on that night as The Beatles did their only Vancouver concert. Audio of the concert plus pre show, post show and during the show coverage of what was going on was broadcast
live on CKNW.

In the Aircheck section of RadioWest.ca is the audio of that night: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=8090

Jack's show was always unpredicable and entertaining. Saturday nights were a notch above the weeknights. It was real radio!
