TEAM 1040 radio is about to lose one of its top broadcasters, The Province has learned.

According to sources, Rick Ball — who does play-by-play for the sports radio station’s B.C. Lions and Vancouver Canucks broadcasts — will be leaving Vancouver to take on a similar position with Rogers Sportsnet in Calgary, where he’ll call the Flames TV games in the coming season.

Ball’s departure, which is expected to be officially announced this week, will leave big shoes to fill at TEAM 1040.

TEAM 1040 program director Mike Whittingham said Monday via text message that there’s “nothing much more we can say right now.”

Ball, who has been at TEAM 1040 for 11 years, has also been a part of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast team. Earlier in his broadcast career, Ball called games for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets

I'm looking forward to hearing Rick Ball on Sportsnet West. Reports suggest that Kelly Hrudey will be joining Rick in the Ed Whalen broadcast gondola. This is an upgrade over the previous Flames' Sportsnet TV crew.

Gonna miss hearing Peter Maher on Sportsnet 960 the Fan though. Not since the first season with Bart Dailey has there been another radio voice of the Flames. Will Pete be succeeded by Peter Loubardias?

Pete's earned his retirement. Hope he's enjoying some good northren(sic) Chinese food. ;-)

Still waiting for a "successor" -- in terminology only -- for Maher on radio.
It will be an extremely tough gig to follo!!
Hoping it won't be Loubo. I just find him irritating on air as he simply refuses to shut the f*ck up!!
Hitmen voice Brad Curle would be a good choice. He's earned the chance!!

It's Derek Wills, former voice of the Hamilton Bulldogs.

OK then, good luck to you, Derek Wills!!
"Good luck" getting a word in edge-wise w/Loubo again as the 'colour man'!!
Am I the only one who misses having a well-spoken former player like Mike Rogers, Perry Berezan would've been good -- somebody that's actually been there/done that -- handling "colour"??
Like Hrudey for TV!! He's solid!

I'm with you Hendu. Always preferred a former player as colour guy/analyst working with a play by play broadcaster.

As an Albertan used to the likes of Doug Barkley et. al., I found it odd listening to Tom Larscheid on Canucks' broadcasts when in BC. I didn't have the same feeling when he did Lions' games though, since he is an ex-CFLer.
