Drex sign off - "Hello to Shut Ins" - like Jim Robson

Postby Tom Jeffries » Wed Jan 21, 2015 5:13 pm

I had a friendly chat with Drex today (*he's a very nice guy, BTW). I had asked him about his closing line these days - adding "hello to shut ins".

He explained he has been using Jim Robson's famous "hello to shut ins", like the old Canucks Broadcasts as an homage to Robson, number one, and two, it was suggested by our very own Donovan T., who hangs around here. (*Donovan is an incredible guy - and blind, but he is unstoppable).

So - the bottom line is Drex is paying tribute to Robson and a lot of people that can use the shout out - and not lifting a phrase, so to speak.

I think that passes muster on all counts.

Maybe he could alternate it with telling people not to fall out of trees, Cheers Customers, Thanks a bunch BC, or Keep Your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.

"Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." was always my favourite. Jimmy Durante closed his radio show with it.

My God some people are quick to condemn others! Perhaps the signature was used by someone else..so what! At least he acknowledges where it came from and probably creates a warm and fuzzy for those same shut-ins. Leave Drex alone and find something constructive to say, do or write.

Let me clarify... I don't actually say it myself, it's a vintage piece of audio that Eric found in the NW archives a while ago.
Donovan, one night while calling into the show mentioned it, and Eric played it. Donovan reminisced about how that made him
feel as a kid when he would hear Jim say it.

So, from that day forward we decided to play that same piece of audio at the end of the show, mainly because we have a lot of blind
listeners, and many have e-mailed me thanking me for playing the audio, it makes them feel included.

I'm sorry if it upsets anyone, but It has it's place, as a nod to the blind & shut ins that listen, and to the fact the Jim Robson is a living legend.

The decision was made by me out of respect for the past, and for how that one line made people feel.

We mustn't forget the late Ron Morrier, and his CHAN TV Allstar Wrestling salute, where early in the show he would always say " hello to all the shut-ins at home" , and end the show with something along the lines of "Be the good Lord willing, we'll see you next week."

Mr. Robson got it from Cal George.

I await the bashing of Mr. Robson on this message board for being unoriginal.
