I thought it was fair because Numeris survey techniques would see them with an equal number of males and females in each age group. But I hadn't thought about whether there are an equal number of listening hours for Males and Females in that age group. Or, of course, what demographics advertisers actually care about.

All that said, it is perhaps the best indicator of just how skewed the 2+ Numbers are by those 55 years and older.

For sure. Two reasons it looks that way:

1) They're big radio users, but have almost no stations targeting them. So those that come close get all those hours.
2) They're big into talk radio, where smaller audiences spend way more time that music station with larger listener bases.

How ever you slice it, the obvious most successful stick in the market is QM. You can sell those kind of numbers just by putting out a big 10 gallon bucket on the lawn with a sign saying "fill me with 100 dollar bills please".

But those adult women numbers for NW...oooh..that's gotta hurt.
It's also a clear sign how badly 104.3 is failing. ( as if further evidence were needed).

CHQM is a money machine.

Wonder when we see a station go dark? The lousy economy must be killing these guys - and so, something has to give.

Incredibly interesting how CBC 2 beats CBC 1 in that group.

What NW has essentially done is blown away their old audience because they thought they could replace it with a younger gen. This has now blown up in their face with their old audience finding a new home with little chance of returning and their new audience target not an option for even a small share. This now has resulted in lost ratings they will never get back. Does anyone know if the chem-trail show at night has done better than the rest of the day? Probably a cheaper alternative anyways.

The economy and, coincidentally, the decision on CANCON for TV this week, may well push the 'off' button on a number of channels and stations, not that it hasn't been happening already, especially on the TV side. The general leaning toward a free market ideology has resulted in broadcast licenses being given away in cereal boxes -- we have too many stations, too much 'narrow casting', too much dilution of audiences and advertising dollars. All in all, a very unhealthy business and cultural climate.

A source tells me that ads are getting pretty darned cheap on NW...don't know what 'cheap' looks like, but it would be interesting to find out. This, of course, sets off the traditional media death spiral. Ad revenue goes down, cut staff to cut costs, degrade the product, turn off the listeners, ad revenue goes down....repeat. In terms of service to the country, things seemed to be much richer and more valuable to society when a broadcast license was...do you remember?....a license to print money.

I heard that you can buy an ROS campaign on the desperate CKNW for as low as $42 bucks a spot!

Mr. Dent is absolutely bang on. Sadly.

Death Spiral.

There are way too many stations and the BOOMERS are being ignored *except by CBC and CHQM.

Not only are these results tragic, they border on corporate, if not criminal negligence.

Is it not obvious that those who should know better (ie: Siemens and others) didn't and don't know better?

Those of us who could influence programming in a positive and useful way are not invited.

As a result, the spiral will continue.

Place your bets. Heads down - cards to the players. Read 'em and weep.

I disagree with Dent. The market is anything but free..it's quite the opposite. You have a commodity that's regulated by the government, somewhat by necessity that's wound up in the hands of a few large corporations. Their quest to maximize profits is what's created the death spiral. When a family like the Griffiths owned NW and the economy was having a bad year they didn't fire staff, instead they took less profits. In the good years they made up for it. Public owned corporations with shareholders don't always have that luxury.
