Vancouver Sun and The Province merge newsrooms

Vancouver Sun and The Province merge newsrooms

Postby kal » Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:15 pm

It's an ugly business. Postmedia is carrying a debt of around $700 million. Can both papers actually hang on? It seems less and less likely.

Here's a CBC story on today's announcement of newsroom mergers across the country in four major markets.

Although there were no layoffs announced in Vancouver there will apparently be buyout offers in the coming days. Expect to see some of your favourite reporters leaving the business.

90 more jobs, over the falls.
This is starting to get to be a nearly daily event.
Media used to be a career. Now?

Watch for some talented reporters at The Sun to take buyouts this week or next. It's easy to speculate.

They have budgeted for a lot of buyouts, according to a friend in the know.

The folks that take the buyouts will never work in the business again, for the same "Union Wages". This is a bust up of the Unions, to save money, and also a way for the big wigs to keep their share prices from cratering. (*they can only do this for so long).

All media is under siege.

As far as I'm concerned newspaper ownership in this country lost what little credibility they had left when they all came out in mass endorsing Harper during last years federal election. Final nail in the coffin.

The new realities

The world is not the same - the guys with earbuds and the gals texting are set to take over from us old farts

Get use to it

Most people don't have the patience to read newspapers to find out what they saw on the internet or on tv - therefor not current and relevant

Radio is to me is not relevant - its a music box - maybe why so many of you know that rockstar who just died - I have forgotten his name already.

BUT I will always remember, Red, Monty, Forstie, CFUN, CKLG, Shane - the personalities that made radio that magic world - Remember Bill Good Sr. what a voice - WX what a production studio, jingles, dollar forty nine day, Hi I am Harry Hummer. Big Al, Pat Burns, Webster.....

:violent1: time for bed

There will always be good reporters I just hope there is an employer to offer them a job.
