Dark days in radio land

Postby kal » Tue Mar 29, 2016 9:28 pm

The looming collapse of iHeartMedia.

These are dark days in radio land. The biggest player in North America is iHeart, and it is swimming in debt, so much debt that it looks doubtful that it can be paid off. Bankruptcy may be the only way out. Check out some of the many properties that will be affected. You'll recognize some of the names.

Overheard from an iHeart salesman:
"Hey! Wanna buy some spawts?
Then, how 'bout a whole radio station?
Even better, I can get you a cluster of stations.
Price?
How much ya got on ya?"

Clear Channel (iHeart Media) are responsible for the mess that is called radio today. They and their greedy shareholders deserve what they get or don't get when the dust settles.

Remember the days, not all that long ago, when a standalone AM or an AM'FM combo was a license to print money even though they were fully staffed, live and local 24/7?

Like many these days, I seldom have the radio on when I'm at home and in the car, other than checking the odd traffic report, the radio is on Sirius.

Radio, along with magazines and newspapers have had their day in the sun.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

re: Sirius ... I finally have a car with the ability to tune in XM radio. I have presets for CNN, CNBC and a few music channels. It's really quite compelling. Once the free period is over I'll be trying for the low-ball $3/month offering that apparently comes up if you say you aren't listening much to the service, or that you haven't had time to really try it. The only annoying part is the number of cutouts on my particular commuter route.
