That's a far cry from a 50,000 watt transmitter from Burns Bog. The question is whether Corus would even spend the money that's required to repair this am station transmitter with a 1.0 or so audience.

It may however be a demographically important 1.0. I know a lot of millennials in the tech sector listen to the station when they have to commute.

With a similar Corus situation in Edmonton, iNews880, I've often wondered what kind of number they would get, as an overall 2+ number, if they got 25% of the commuters on the road but only for 60 seconds once each during morning and afternoon commutes.

Bet it wouldn't be very big. Even though that would be almost an impossible dream, in terms of success, at least from the Traffic side of things.

Late last night, a Seattle DX'er checked out 730 and did not think the signal was much different than normal.

Here is CHMJ's 50,000 watt night pattern from Burns Bog:

My friend would be in the deepest Null that shows at Due South on the drawing. Not that much more than the omni-directional 400 watts being broadcast now.

AM730 has gone back to (apparently) full power. The change occurred overnight. At least yesterday the station was still difficult to pick up here along the Mary Hill Bypass area.

Giving credit to Gord Lansdell's "Northwest Broadcasters" site, back on with 10 kW as of 3.45 pm Mon 25 July.

At 10 kW the signal to me sounds as good as at 50 kW. Why wouldn't the station just leave it at that and take some savings?

Here's a back-of-the-envelope calculation:

40 kW reduction at say 10 c /kWH is roughly 40x0.1x25 = $100/day. (ok, it's actually $96).

Are there any other savings to be had for reducing output power?

Not sure what their current 10KW patterns look like, but their 50KW day pattern is not too different than the diagram I posted above.

With that kind of 50KW pattern, 730 has an effective 100KW trying to "drill through" those concrete rebars into high rise buildings in Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and most of Richmond, giving them a fighting chance, especially when coupled with their relatively low frequency. CKNW really does need to move to 730.

A DX'er in Portland is reporting that he has been hearing a weak signal from AM 730 all day today. With the normal four tower 50,000 watt Day Pattern, he would not be hearing them at all, except on freak days when most of the other Vancouver stations could also be heard. Today it is just 730.

CBU-690 is the one exception as their coverage of Victoria sends a decent signal to the South.

This summer’s Burns Bog fire originated at the base of a radio tower although the cause is still undetermined, it was announced Wednesday.

Delta fire chief Dan Copeland said in a statement that the investigation has now been completed into the fire that occurred in July.

He said Delta Fire and Emergency Services will continue to work with Metro Vancouver Parks, the B.C. Wildfire service and other agencies to ensure the most effective response.

The fire began July 3 and scorched 78 hectares.

The 30-square-kilometre bog is a migratory route for a variety of birds and is believed to be the largest undeveloped urban wilderness area in North America.

The bog’s acidic, peat-forming ecosystem includes rare plants, such as cloudberries and velvet-leafed blueberries, and a diverse collection of insect species.
