Potential RFI Solution for New Software-Defined Radios?

Scientists develop new material to block electromagnetic waves from electronic devices

We are surrounded by gadgets and devices as we have become highly dependent on them. Often we hear that many of these devices, especially mobile phones and televisions, emit electromagnetic waves and radiation that are quite harmful in the long run.

Finally we have a solution. In a major breakthrough, a group of South Korean scientists have developed a new material that is said to effectively block electromagnetic waves coming from electronic gadgets and appliances.

The team led by Gu Jong-min of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and a research team of Drexel University in the US successfully manufactured the material made out of Mxene. It is a class of two-dimensional inorganic compounds made out of titanium and carbon and a single layer is only about one nanometer.

Mxene can block the electromagnetic waves from mobile phones, televisions, microwave ovens and other appliances. The best part is that the material is easy to process and the cost is relatively cheap.

“It is hoped that the developed material can be used not only to block electromagnetic waves but for other various purposes,” Gu said.

Of course the material is still under the development stage and could take a while before it is used commercially.

Titus II is a revolutionary new combo tablet computer and Software-Defined Radio (SDR) that will sell for less than $100 U.S. dollars when it goes into mass production later this year.

Nick Hall-Patch, Technical Editor for the IRCA's DX Monitor, pointed out the potential RFI (Interference) issues of having the processor so close to the internal antenna used for AM reception. Which would effectively make it useless for listening to anything but local stations on the AM band.

Covering the processor (and perhaps part of the display) with the material described in the above article could be the "silver bullet" solution to making it practical to make tablets with built-in SDR hardware and software.

Unfortunately, you cannot just throw a cap over a processor. Cooling becomes an issue.

Copper screen and lead.
Used for almost a century to block radio frequency interference from nearby transmitters getting into studio equipment.
This isn't rocket science.
