Global BC moves to increase 6pm news ratings

Word has reached the fly that Global BC's 6pm news will soon be simulcast on CKNW radio.
Is it just the beginning? Will the 8am and Noon 'majors' follow?

Global News Hour at 6 to simulcast on CKNW
By Staff
Global News

Starting Nov. 7, CKNW listeners will be able to hear Chris Gailus, Sophie Lui, Kristi Gordon and Squire Barnes every weeknight at 6 p.m. on the radio.

The full hour of Global News Hour at 6 will be simulcast on CKNW.

Corus Entertainment, the parent company of both powerhouse brands, says this collaboration to provide the hour-long, contextual wrap-up of the day’s news and events will appeal to radio listeners and is a natural next step in the evolution of Corus’ combined assets.

“Simulcasting News Hour at 6 on CKNW will help us grow audiences on both our TV and radio platforms,” said Kenton Boston, VP, Global News & Corus Radio, Western Canada. “Whether you’re on the road, at your desk, at home or on-the-go, accessing the best in news and storytelling has never been easier.”

Tune in to Global BC’s News Hour at 6 PST on Nov. 7 on CKNW AM 980, on the CKNW AM 980 app, on Global, on Apple Music, Apple Carplay or 101.1 FM HD2.

Not sure of the current status of "video-described" television, the opposite of Closed Captioning as it is intended for the Blind, but this would be an ideal opportunity for Global BC to offer it for their supper hour News.

Then it would be this that they would air on CKNW rather than the television audio channel.

More likely, with the precedent of CHUM airing regular audio from CP24 in Toronto 24/7, it seems much more likely that Corus has chosen to air the same audio on CKNW as Global BC broadcasts.

Wondering what this means for the few remaining solid news people at 'NW, such as Terry Schinz and Gord MacDonald. Also noticing that Elaine Scollan hasn't been running traffic the last little while on 'NW.

This will be an unmitigated disaster.
1050 CHUM tried this in the 90s, simulcasting CITY-TVs 6pm show.
TV relies on visuals.
Radio is sound.
TV uses visual supers to identify who's speaking and for lots of other information, useless as it may be.
The lack of this visual information on radio leaves the listener dazed and confused.
They might sample the audio broadcast once or twice but will almost instantly tune out.
The REAL reason is to try to drive some of the dwindling radio audience to the TV broadcast, also suffering from a dwindling audience.
(See my previous post about abysmal 6pm TV News ratings in Vancouver.)
Another dumb move by the corpse.

Will it be branded as the global news hour on Cknw? I think the defunked STAR-FM did something similar with UTV news in the 90s.

Just the latest reason for my finger pointing at the CRTC. I’ve been doing it for many years now. It all started with the Commission allowing corporations to own more than one or two licenses in a single city. First it was four radio stations in a market,. Then it was two TV stations in a market. Now it’s simulcasting programming between TV and radio. Is this really what serving a market means? I think not. Imagine all the visuals in your average TV newscast and how they'll show up on radio. Again, I draw your attention to the Q4 report from CORUS Entertainment. Dismissals and simulcasting equal a larger profit margin. Wait until the Q1 Report!

Nothing like watching TV on the radio.

Anybody left working at Global or NW, you'd better have your resume up to date and get ready to move on to plan B.

And I'd hold off on buying new duds for the Christmas party, it's still 2 months away.

Now I'm really waiting to see if my suggestion about replacing the Global Morning News with a John McComb simulcast happens.

Maybe Randene was tipped about changes coming real soon.

This should be interesting to say the least.

A couple of years ago NW attempted to simulcast with Global for Civic Election results and it sounded like absolute shit.

Not too long ago NW was BC's News Leader, now it's reduced to simulcasting a failing evening TV newscast.

What a sad end to what was once one of Canada's highest rated and most respected radio stations.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I smell a slash and burn here. Could be corporations are starting to realize that the Mainstream Media has less and less impact with people; either not trusting them as much as in the past or just not tuning in. This possibly has them going for option 2 where the product on the air is diminished, people are fired, costs are reduced, ratings decrease and but overall profits go up.

I'm just not sure that there even is enough of a potential audience for a "6 o'clock News Package" on Radio anymore.

Over the last half century, the popularity of Supper Hour News on TV has grown immensely. As the name implies, people watch it while eating dinner, much less practical 50 years ago when the only TV in the house usually could not been seen from the dinner table.

And there is still "The World at Six" on CBC Radio One to serve those few remaining listeners.

Locally, here in Edmonton, CHED runs Inside Sports from 6-9pm.

Media consolidation started at the same time broadband internet was growing. Corporations merged and then steadily reduced the quality of the content while at the same time facing new competition for eyes and ears. Where there was a live person doing an all night shift on thousands of radio stations across North America we now have Coast To Coast and other syndicated programming. The large corporations that run the Canadian media have looted and pillaged the public airwaves for private profit. If the broadcasters would have tried to pull this simulcast stunt in the 90s they would have been laughed out of a CRTC hearing but in 2016 it's not a problem. That's what you get for allowing three companies to control all of the media and means of distribution.

Great points (as usual) by Mike Cleaver - it's all about the "sound" and, just as radio personalities may have "faces made for radio," some TV personalities' "lispy" voices would sound terrible on the radio. Plus, I think news/talk radio listeners either want talk or sports radio commentary or they want a repetitive "news wheel" format.

LOL at radiofan's comments about this boosting Global News Hour's ratings - so true - except now they'll have to try and piece together the ratings from different TV and radio ratings surveys, which might have different survey periods and metrics. ;)

Cheers,
Doug
