Will Drex be the C2C replacement at Corus?

Postby flyonthewall » Sun Dec 24, 2017 2:39 pm

Got together for some Christmas cheer with a few old comrades from the Black Tower this weekend and the word in the hallowed halls is that Drex will be the host of the soon to launch Corus network late night show that will be aired from Vancouver to Toronto.

So much for the application process. Replacing a BMW with a Yugo. Brilliant.

This speculation has been around for some time now. The post above lends additional credence to the theory.

'NW has a history of talk shows overnight. Didn't Rafe Mair run post-midnight for some years?

Interesting theory. Drex certainly has an in-your-face voice. Some might even describe his delivery as grating, not the best attribute for a late-night host. Maybe Corus brass can put Drex on Valium to mellow him out.

If, say, Drex has a 10-1 am slot, would he pre-record with guests and panels so it could air, without phone-ins from listeners, in the same slot across Canada? Or would he broadcast live, thereby allowing segments for open-line calls? But what would Eastern stations program while waiting for Drex to begin in their respective time zones?

Nothing to do with the C2C slot but I notice Drex playing Christmas tracks this afternoon. I seem to recall someone saying that 'NW had given up paying for music rights after Frosty retired. It was noted that Frosty insisted on playing one song every shift, usually around 7:20 AM, just so the "bean counters" would have to may the annual fee for music broadcasting to the licensing bodies.

When the job was posted a few weeks ago, it was for a show to run in the same time slot C2C ran. 10P -2A Pacific (1A-5A Eastern). There is no point to doing a show with pre-recorded interviews where listeners can't participate. But then again, NW has tried to do away with listeners calling in the past few years in favour of The Buzz Line and social media.

This will be a network show, running on 7 Corus stations between Vancouver and Toronto. I don't think bike lanes on Vancouver streets will be a big topic.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Thanks radiofan for revealing the proposed hours of the new program. But by airing it live, Corus is probably putting some stations east of BC in a bind: What do they program each night before the new show airs? Speaking of every night, presumably there will also be a weekend host for the new creation? Or will Corus, in its ‘wisdom’, only run it Sunday to Thursday or Monday to Friday (Pacific Time)?

You have got to be kidding? Drex is such a lightweight. The few times I've heard him, he had no grasp of the issue, and zero command of the language. Just another in a long line of wanna-bes, lacking THE most critical attribute of a host: life experience. If this is the best Corus can do, they're in more trouble then the pundits suggest.

What annual fee is this? Money is paid on a per-composition basis. I'm sure some people here can tell you about the old CAPAC weeks.

I believe SOCAN fees are being discussed. They are, as I understand it, based on the station's revenue.

As long as he works on his accent (sounds like Aussie Hillbilly at times) it might work with him working from 7-12 PST and stations can pick the live hours they want across the country and mix in with recorded hours.

One thought that has worked as a One Off for national broadcast, but may "get old fast", is a rolling live show. "As It Happens" did it from time to time in the 1970s.

In Corus' case, it could be really flexible for stations as they could pick whatever hours fit best into their schedules, without having to worry about Time Zone issues.

In "As It Happens" case, they knew exactly what hours and half-hours were being aired in each time zone, so could "cheat" and repeat a topic later in the show, knowing that no station would air both hours. They still did it live, with different listeners calling in, though they always were pretty light on listener calls, relying instead on calling out to pre-booked "experts". Some repeated topics could be adjusted slightly to appeal more to the part of the country listening later.

Good to see solid 'NW news reader Bailey Nicholson being added as a dedicated part of the new Drex show, The Shift, 10 pm - 2 am, starting this evening.
