Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1981 ... It's Blue Northern and "You're Not The Same Girl" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

An American ex-pat, Bill Cowsill was on the periphery of Blue Northern for a spell, before joining as a player, singer and producer. Bill picked up so many production skills during the late ‘60s heyday of his family’s band The Cowsills that he improved any subsequent musical venture he undertook. Ray O’Toole was very much the heart of Blue Northern, but Bill contributed much to the band’s soul.

Bill didn’t often sing the blues but certainly lived them. The musical rise and fall of The Cowsills has been well documented. Suffice to say, having a dysfunctional, domineering father as a group manager, contributed to the group’s demise. After moseying around Yellowknife and then Alberta, Bill found the perfect landing pad with Blue Northern. Years later, he’d pick the name Blue Shadows for his Everly Brothers-Influenced project with Jeff Hatcher.

After years of declining health, Bill Cowsill died in Calgary in February 2006, a day before the New Orleans memorial service for his brother Barry whose body was found months after being washed away during Hurricane Katrina. Sadly, his former life partner Mitzi Gibbs passed later that same year. An impeccable stained-glass artisan and a visible supporter of the ‘70s Vancouver rock scene, Ms Gibbs was the mother of Bill’s son Del.

My bad. I hit Send before adding that Blue Northern owed its origins to Gary Comeau, Lee Roy Stephens and Brady Gustafson. It was that existing trio of what today would be called Alt-Country enthusiasts which attracted the participation of Ray O’Toole and then Bill Cowsill.
