Commercial-Free Nine to Noon on Capital-FM Edmonton

Postby jon » Mon Jan 08, 2018 1:06 pm

CKRA 96.3 Capital-FM in Edmonton is now running commercial-free from Nine to Noon on weekdays. Not as a jukebox, but with an announcer doing frequent short breaks.

Today it was Karl Douglas, in for Jake Taylor. Previously, she (Jake) had been all-nights on CFCW for many years.

In this market, occasional 90-100 minute runs of music without ads, was the most I was aware of previously.

Admittedly, I worked for a very successful Top 40 station that ran 7 hours every night without commercials, from 6:00 p.m. to 1:05 a.m. signoff. But that was small market B.C. in 1972, not major market Alberta in 2018.

Very clever (not)!
Why not just drop the pretence and start running promos that say, "We know that commercials are a necessary evil - and we hate them too. Besides, we will make up the difference throughout the day."
Advertisers will understand (not).

What are the numbers for the stations... is CBC top dog, with a soft rocker as #2 and Capital wants to be it. CBC AM in that time slot does The Current and Q.

CBC has never been #1 in Edmonton, certainly not in the last 50 years. Never dug deep, but CKUA is generally considered the reason.

Last overall ratings were:
  1. CHED - 10.6
  2. NOW-FM - 9.5
  3. Sonic-FM - 7.6
  4. CISN Country - 7.2
  5. Tie between Capital-FM and CBX at 6.7
Women 25-54:
  1. NOW-FM - 14.1
  2. Sonic-FM - 12.6
  3. KiSS (Top 40, formerly Bounce) - 8.5
  4. CISN Country - 8.1
  5. Fresh-FM - 7.7
Men 25-54:
  1. NOW-FM - 13.0
  2. The Bear - 11.5
  3. CHED - 10.0
  4. Sonic-FM - 9.8
  5. CISN Country - 8.0
Note that Sonic is Modern Rock, not Top 40 like the Vancouver branding.

Also, lest the Numeris "police" come after me, the figures above are Numeris' own published figures and David Bray's demographics on his web site.

A little off the topic, however, some survey is done by some on air people... evening guy at Rock101 Van, as example.. others do similar... so the question is, what kind of results are received, and does some issue raise more response over another.

Is this a method to shape audience response. The multimedia interaction. If you solicit views, then the news must be given for the reaction. Does news return on the hourly or semi-hourly to FM, rather than being the music box :)

The above survey results are age groups based on gender. It doesn't say much more, where as the live survey gives details.

To get back on topic, CKUA is the wild card in it, and has always been :)
