CKNW newsroom moving to Global in Burnaby?

Postby flyonthewall » Mon Mar 12, 2018 7:37 pm

Looks like CKNW news boss Jill Kropp wants her radio staff closer.
Word has reached the Fly that not only will the number of news readers be cut back, but there will be more simulcasts, possibly starting with the 5am major.
If true, another sad event for the once powerful organization.
Looks like Charmaine da Silva is getting out just in time.

What a f'ing joke.

Is there any assets left in the Black Tower from the once mighty CKNW?

Is there anymore chairs to shuffle on The Titanic?
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Unfortunately for those in the radio/tv news biz, they have become redundant and outdated. News apps aplenty give you instant info 24/7. Radio/tv news is sometimes days old. It's only place now is the rare 'breaking news'...which these two dinosaurs label most every item in their lame effort to sound current.

Will it be the news room, or the news desk?

And...I keep waking up in the middle of the night

"Now here is the news" - doing my best impersonation of John McKitrick

can we all sing together (cleaver on the fiddle)

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days my friend :bag:
We thought they'd never end

Rob Brown, who has been chief engineer at Corus Radio Vancouver since Jan. 2014 and prior to that Corus Guelph and Kitchener, is moving to the Jim Pattison station cluster in Winnipeg. (Broadcast Dialogue)

If I read it right, Rob Brown moves to Winnipeg. He can look at the bright side: affordable real estate, much less precipitation and—unless things have changed—welcoming and friendly folks.

The fact that I haven’t returned to Winnipeg even once since I departed for Vancouver in 1979 says something, but if asked, I’d still offer a lot of real positives about the place.
Skelly’s absolutely right; at least back at that time, so many friendly, kind and welcoming people living there. Being a crossroads both geographically and for radio and other careers, many were from elsewhere with a mind to a plan to ultimately move on to better places. Perhaps that’s why there was a feeling of support and companionship. We were all in the same frozen boat.
The only two real negatives about Winnipeg then, as I’m sure even now, was the weather and the sense of isolation.
Anyone who’s spent a few winters in Manitoba (..which is how time is measured there) will tell you that the only truly tolerable season is autumn; that brief 6 to 8 week period lying between Labor Day and Halloween.
That “middle-of-nowhere” sense comes when you realize the nearest next “big” city is Regina, for crying out loud, and that’s a six hour drive. Any other direction, you’re seven hours to Minneapolis or eight hours to Thunder Bay.
Driving north, it’s a long way to Moscow.

Another of my "almost worked there" cities when Dale O'Hara, who'd hired me to work at CKXL in Calgary when he was News Director there, tried to entice me away from 1050 CHUM to work at CKY, where he was then helming the News Department for both radio and TV.
He offered me morning news, six til 9 and then the six pm news anchor job.
He flew me out to Winnipeg in what was supposed to be spring.
The plane took three attempts before it was able to land in an intense blizzard with high wind and the snow going sideways.
Stepping off the plane, it was bitterly cold and you almost got blown over by the gusts.
Did the obligatory tour of the station, took me to the apartment they'd chosen for me and then we went to dinner and talked terms.
Everything was good.....except the weather.
I'd driven across Canada a few times as well and as Neumann says, in Winnipeg, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.
It did produce a lot of radio greats though.

I grew up listening to my Uncle complain about Winnipeg's winters on the one hand, but also learning in school that Winnipeg was giving Vancouver a run for its money as 3rd most populated metro area in Canada, thanks to major investments by the Federal Government of the day.

As an adult, my only time spent in Winnipeg was for a computer conference in the early 1980s. In December. The people and the City had a great feel to it.

But, as I ran into former Manitoba residents, I realized that it would be the summers that would drive me nuts. Heat and humidity is a bad combination for me and the only time I've felt it was worth the discomfort was in Hilo, Hawaii, the one place on the planet that matched my teenage/DX'er expectations, i.e. - my impression of Hilo from listening to a station from there and receiving information sent by the station, compared with my experience on vacation there in the 1990s and 2000s.

And what in the name of Little Green Apples does that even remotely have to do with the topic at hand?

I wouldn't want RadioWest to be the only radio-related discussion area in the world where all the Posts were responses to the OP (Original Post) of the thread.

Time to move on. My work here is complete.

Jon you might want to expand

You are moving to a new thread or packing up the rabbits and heading home to Edmonton.

Just asking

Yes sometimes threads go a bit awry BUT - we cannot sit on the natives who all keep us going.

I was only trying to buck up Mr. Brown’s spirits if, by chance, he’s wincing at having to leave Vancouver. I’m not a Manitoba mole surreptitiously drumming up newcomers for the ‘Peg. I did have relatives on my mother’s side living in rural Cloverdale, outside Winnipeg. No known Skelly relatives there. On visits, I’d often be asked if I was related to Jack Skelly, a popular record-store owner. Answer is “No” although Jack appeared to be much more gregarious than me.
