I listened to a lot of Radio between 1962 and 1974, but never once heard "Mess Around" played as an Oldie. In fact, I never heard it until I got Sirius/XM in mid-2010 and started listening to 50s on 5.
Lots of great '50s music never got played as an Oldie, which made it a prime candidate for "Re-use". In part or in whole. "Mountain of Love" being the best example that always pops into my head. I also thought Johnny Rivers did it first, but Harold Dorman's original version hit #21 in 1960, and David Houston scored his first hit with it, at #2 on the Country charts in 1963, which also Bubbled Under the Billboard Hot 100.
